Hand Calling
Hand calling is a rewarding way of calling in predators. It feels good to know that your own sounds brought them in. It takes practice and I think it brings more of a challenge. When had calling remember that predators are looking for where that sound is coming from, which is why its important to not move too much and only move slow. It does not matter whether or not you call continuously or call in sequences. Calling continously will wear you out. Also calling continously gives the predator more of an opportunity to lock onto the sound and potentionally see you. Taking breaks between calling makes it so the predator has to come in and find the sound. Instead of coming in and leaving because they are hearing the sound and not seeing what is making the sound, they come in searching and looking because they don't know exactly what bush the sound is coming from. Giving breaks between calling is also a good thing because predators are excellant at pin-pointing sounds.
The first call I ever bought as a new and inexperienced predator hunter was a closed reed call. The difference between an open reed and closed reed is simply the reed being visible or not. I bought the closed reed call because it was the popular name brand and it was easier for the new caller I was. I still like both types of calls because both have different sounds but my favorite is an open reed call. Open reed calls can be harder to figure out, but with a little practice it will make your calling that much better.
An open reed call can produce such a wide range of sounds. The best part about an open reed call is its so unique in its sound, meaning everyone sounds just a little bit different. We are seeing more hunters out in the woods than ever before. Predator hunting is becoming a very popular sport and with more people means more competition. Its getting more tough to call something in because chances are some other caller has been there before and used the same sounds. If you really want to be a great predator caller you have to do something different, something no one else is doing. Now I love closed reed calls and electronic calls as well, but every one is using them that's new to the sport and is just getting started. By trying something different, what less people are doing and giving the open reed call a shot, it just may be what you need to bring in some dogs.
